In 1994, third- and
fourth-floor additions were added to an existing building at University Medical Center.
The outpatient pavilion expansion consisted of a Cardiac Care Unit on the third floor and
an OB/GYN Unit on the fourth floor. Texas Tech University's central heating and cooling
plant provided steam and chilled water to the hospital. High-pressure steam was reduced to
15 lbs. at the entrance to the hospital and distributed to air handling equipment. Chilled
water was delivered from the central plant at 44° F, and three-way valves were used on
existing air handling units. The chilled water temperature differentials through the
existing air units were low, creating operational problems in the central plant.HVAC system services included replacing the three-way valves with
two-way valves and converting the chilled water system in the hospital to a
primary/secondary variable flow pumping system to provide a 14ºF rise in temperature. The
primary/secondary chilled water system and steam were extended to the
outpatient pavilion expansion. The air handling system included two draw-through air
handling units serving terminal reheat coils. The units included smoke removal control, as
required by the Texas Department of Health.
Plumbing systems
included sewer, water, and vent piping, potable cold and hot water piping, RO and DI water
piping, and fire protection piping. Medical gas systems included oxygen, vacuum, and
compressed air.
The addition's
electrical systems included normal and emergency power, lighting, fire alarm, nurse call,
and code blue systems.
Agnew Associates provided the following services: HVAC, electrical, and plumbing design,
construction documents, and construction administration. |
