The complex is
comprised of two U-shaped buildings around a common courtyard with similar architecture to
that of the Administration Building. The Education Building has three stories with a
partial basement, while the English/Philosophy Building has four stories and a partial
basement. Each building contains a 200-seat lecture hall within the basement, computer lab
classrooms, general learning classrooms, offices, and distance learning facilities.
The HVAC system is comprised of 16 variable volume air handlers,
each utilizing chilled water and heating water. The systems are designed to provide
significant user control of space temperature while limiting installation costs. All units
are provided with direct digital control and full economizer capability to maximize energy
conservation. Chilled water is provided through an interconnect with the campus tunnel
system. Steam from the campus central plant is used as the heat source for heating water
and domestic hot water.
The plumbing
systems include waste, sewer, and vent piping, potable cold and hot water piping, and a
storm drainage system. The fire protection system consists of a fully automatic fire
sprinkler and wet standpipe.
Agnew Associates designed the lighting systems to meet the
requirements of the Texas State Energy Code. The majority of the spaces utilize standard
fluorescent fixtures with T-8 lamps and electronic ballasts. More prominent building
spaces include specialty selected lighting fixtures that blend with the historic
architecture of the building.
The electrical system for the buildings is served through two new
transformers and a single emergency generator. Each building has an addressable fire alarm
system with automated voice evacuation.
