The original Texas
Tech University library was constructed in 1960, and an addition was added in 1974. In
1998, the five story portion of the building was renovated. Agnew Associates replaced the variable air volume, dual-duct HVAC
system with air handling units and air distribution. A DDC energy management system,
high-efficiency fan motors, and the variable flow pumping were retrofitted to systems
throughout the building to reduce energy costs. AAI also designed a combination
standpipe/automatic sprinkler system to upgrade the fire protection system. A new 1950
GPM, 150 horsepower fire pump was designed to feed the system. Agnew Associates determined
that the existing humidification system was not functional, so steam humidifiers were
installed in the new air handling units. AAI replaced the humidifiers in the
existing air units to provide humidity control throughout the building.
Agnew Associates
designed new electrical systems for the entire renovated area. This included adding new
lighting, power, communications raceways, and a new fire alarm system.
The new lighting
system included high-efficiency lighting fixtures designed to provide the lowest available
watts-per-square-foot ratio. Agnew Associates also added a digitally controlled lighting
control system to the librarys large, public areas.
The new power distribution system allows computer connections at
virtually all desk spaces in the library. The new distribution system started with a 4,000
amp, 480-volt electrical service in the existing basement of the facility. Agnew Associates added new power
distribution panels on each floor to provide power to the large computer load the facility
uses.
The firm included
extensive data and telephone distribution to all desk areas of the facility and integrated
the computer system into the campus fiber optic distribution network.
Agnew Associates
provided the following services: An energy study, HVAC design, lighting, power, and
communications system design, construction documents, and construction administration. |
